4th Place, Honorable Mention at reVision Dallas Competition 2009

re-Vision Dallas

For the first time in human history, the majority of people live in cities and towns instead of rural areas. We want and need our cities - for job opportunities, for access to education and healthcare and culture, for the excitement and innovation often fostered by urban life. But the urban environment in its present configuration can have negative effects as well - on our bodies, on our behaviors, on other species and even on the very air we breathe. We must re-invent the city - build smarter cites - by starting with one sustainable, replicable city block we call Casa Verde - Dallas. Casa Verde builds on the concept that diversity + density = viability. People of all ages and income levels prosper here, nourished by healthy foods grown on-site, enlivened by community events, employed on-site or within easy commute by transit. Our residents and tenants are integrated into a fabric of life - not only within Casa Verde itself, but also within the wider region of the city through on-site cultural events, our recycling center, gardening demonstrations and tours, and outreach programs that brings us into the community and the community into us.
